Transition began as an exploration into how film and painting inform each other. My research looked at medieval illuminations; Byzantine iconography; the Devonshire Tapestries and the film of Parajanov and Tarkovsky. Recently, the work has become more confessional - reflecting on my life as a Catholic London Irish kid in the 1970's and how this shaped my visual understanding of the world. This resulted in a broadening of cultural references (the Brixton Riots, Bloody Sunday, the British Army), which over time led me back to the English Reformation and the state's destruction of medieval painting and sculpture. I am currently playing with the various elements of the research, moving away from a lens based practice back to experimenting with paint, collage and drawing.
