Transition began as an exploration into how film and painting inform each other. My research looked at medieval illuminations; Byzantine iconography; the Devonshire Tapestries and the faith inspired films of Parajanov; Terence Davies; Rossellini; Bresson; Dreyer and Tarkovsky. Recently, the work has become more confessional - reflecting on my life as a disaffected Catholic London Irish kid in the 1970's and how this shaped my visual understanding of the world. This resulted in a broadening of cultural references (experiencing the Brixton Riots, my short spell in the British Army and understanding the events leading to Bloody Sunday), which over time led me back to the English Reformation and the state's destruction of medieval painting and sculpture. I am currently playing with the various elements of the research, moving away from a lens based approach back to experimenting with paint, collage and drawing.
